What is the purpose of public school?
The purpose of public schools is to ensure that all children have education available to them. To have a fun learning environment as well as for the students to feel comfortable. This is important because it gives all children the same opportunities when it comes to getting a good education. It is so important for children to get an education, and public school makes this possible.
Marginalized students in the school system are going to be the students that by virtue of different things such as race or gender are put into the outer limits of the mainstream class. With these students it is important that we show them empathy because we do not know what is truly going on in their life. We need to make sure that we are making their day better and not worse when it comes to these students. These students need to be given equal opportunities as any other student no matter the color of their skin.
Hey Taylor! I really enjoyed reading your blog post about the purpose of schools. I totally agree with providing a fun learning environment for our student's. Sadly, sometimes school is a place where the students can escape from the harsh realities they face at home. I want my classroom to be a safe space for my students, so after reading your post I'm glad we see eye to eye on that.

ReplyDeleteHi Taylor! I really love the way you emphasize comfort and empathy for a student in the classroom. I feel as if students will be more willing to learn if they feel as if they are being understood, feel comfortable, and positive. Growing up, I had a lot of teachers who always seemed to be in a bad mood, never made learning fun, and overall seemed to hate their job and despise the students. I always thought to myself “why would they become a teacher then?” I always felt less willing to participate in the classes with these types of teachers because I was never curious to learn in those classes, so I never knew what was going on. I think a lot of educators forget the power in the role they hold and how they can truly transform a student’s perspective of learning. I agree that comfort and empathy for a student plays a big role in the classroom.
Hi Taylor! I loved your first paragraph, it made me realize how great my elementary school was and how comfortable I felt there. I liked what you said about everyone has the same opportunity to get a good education. You also mentioned empathy and I think it is very important to show as a teacher.
