Stories: Whose are told and whose remain in the margins?

Image
One of the stories that I think is told to everyone in their schooling history is Christopher Columbus. You can ask pretty much everyone and they will say Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492. This information is told all throughout school levels going into a deeper dive the older that a student gets in the school system. This story though also has parts that remain in the margins in the fact that in school we do not learn all the facts that happened with Columbus and what all he did in order for him to "discover the America's" This is one of the stories that came to mind because now that I am in college I am finding out things that happened that I should of learned when I was in middle school or even high school, but the education system that hold things back that they really do not want students to be learning. They are withholding the whole truth in order to make certain things look better then what they really are.       ...

How do we talk about issues that matter?

Image
I think as teachers, it is important to speak on issues, such as hard topics that are happening in the world around us. With teaching younger students in the elementary level I think it is important for them to have good comprehension of these matters just maybe not as in depth as you would with the high school level. To start off, have a question on the board that is going to have the students really think hard and give them examples of certain things. I think this will get their brains thinking of what the topic is so that they are not just blurting out things before they speak. Show a video to your students that will give them more information about the topic that will help them understand the actual facts that are happening versus what they might just be hearing from their peers or even from their parents. I think it is most important that when teaching students and talking to students about issues that matter is that we give them the true facts and not ou...

What is the purpose of public school?

Image
The purpose of public schools is to ensure that all children have education available to them. To have a fun learning environment as well as for the students to feel comfortable. This is important because it gives all children the same opportunities when it comes to getting a good education. It is so important for children to get an education, and public school makes this possible.      Marginalized students in the school system are going to be the students that by virtue of different things such as race or gender are put into the outer limits of the mainstream class. With these students it is important that we show them empathy because we do not know what is truly going on in their life. We need to make sure that we are making their day better and not worse when it comes to these students. These students need to be given equal opportunities as any other student no matter the color of their skin.

Why Teach?

Image
I have always wanted to be a teacher since I was in third grade and would line up my stuffed animals and barbies and teach to them what I had learned that day in school. One of my main reasons why I decided I wanted to be a teacher is that I have had so many teachers make such an impact on my life, that I want to be able to do the same for my future students. I decided to add a minor is special education about a year and a half ago when I started nannying a little bot who is autistic. Learning about Parker and how his brain worked, was hard. So, I got to looking at my education degree to see if I was going to take any courses that would help me not only with Parker but with my future students that would be in my class. To my findings I was only going to take one class, in my whole degree. So I decided I wanted to learn more and do more in that aspect, so I added the minor not only to help myself, but to help others.     As far as grade wise in teaching I wa...
